PCCW Global supplies 100G Asian research network

Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore have completed a 100G research and education network that is the first element in a planned ring connecting Asia and North America.


Asian ringThe new network, built by PCCW Global, is backed by Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Singapore’s National Supercomputing Centre (NSCC) and Singapore Advanced Research and Education Network (SingAREN).

John Kan, president of SingAREN, said: "With the establishment of the 100Gbps research and education network linking Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan, SingAREN looks forward to collaborating with our international partners to advocate joint advanced research, development, and education initiatives."

The plan is to link the Tokyo end of the network to Seattle and Los Angeles with separate subsea cables, and the Singapore end also to Los Angeles, to create the Asia Pacific Ring (APR).

A statement from SingAREN said: "The network will facilitate high-end research and education, bioinformatics and supercomputing collaboration."
