SNG and Special Projects Unit of TIBA Offers News Coverage in the World's Most Challenging Environment

The SNG and Special Projects Unit of Teleport Internacional Buenos Aires (TIBA) provides state-of-the-art satellite news gathering (SNG) - including breaking news, sporting events, conferences, and concerts - in the world's most challenging environments, from Antarctica to the Andes To these assignments, TIBA brings ad-hoc equipment using both SNG mobiles and/or flyaway units (1:1 redundant) on C- and Ku- Bands.

TIBA's accomplishments have included coverage of the 2003 total solar eclipse from Antarctica and of the 2003 Pan-American Games, news broadcasts during crises in Venezuela (2002) and Argentina (2001), the hostage stand-off at Japan's Embassy in Peru (1997), and the first live broadcast from the Falkland Islands (1997).

Reality TV at 15,000 Feet

For TV3 Catalunia Spain, TIBA broadcast the reality show, " EL CIM " for over 45 days in 2002 at an altitude of 15,000 feet. In Cerro Aconcagua, Mendoza, Argentina, a staff of four engineers spent an initial 11 days supervising terrestrial transportation to Mendoza and then helicopter transportation to Plaza de Mulas (elev. 4575 m), where an uplink station was constructed with a 2.4 m antenna.

For Japan Telecom and NHK Television, TIBA provided a turnkey solution for coverage of a total solar eclipse from Russia's Novolazarevskaya Base in Antarctica. Equipment weighing 2500 kg was transported by air cargo to Cape Town, South Africa and then by Russian military aircraft to Antarctica. The HDTV signal was uplinked to ETAM Teleport in the US and then went by fiber to Tokyo. In an environment where the temperature averaged -35&Mac251; C with frequent snowstorms, one of TIBA's more innovative techniques was to pour a "water foundation” for the antenna pad that quickly froze solid and provided a very stable platform for satellite transmission.

TIBA is a leading Latin American carrier for video, audio, data & Internet, having its headquarters in Buenos Aires, teleports in Brazil and Uruguay, commercial offices in Miami, and a large SNG vehicle fleet for satellite broadcasting. TIBA provides services in 85 countries throughout the Americas, Africa and Middle East, and had been chosen by Intelsat as its primary video sales channel in Latin America. Its CEO was WTA's Teleport Executive of the Year in 2003.
