The relationship between teleport operators and satellite operators is of crucial importance to the success of the industry.  But the relationship is complex.  Teleport operators depend on satellite operators for technical excellence and reasonable commercial terms.  As vendors to teleports, satellite operators view them as an important market channel, but may also compete with them for managed services business.  The cost of satellite bandwidth is the single biggest expense for many teleport operators, and poses a substantial risk that a lost customer will leave them paying for capacity they cannot use.

To safeguard the quality of this complex but vital relationship, WTA has conducted the first-ever benchmarking study of satellite carriers as seen through the eyes of their teleport operator customers.  Interviews with a sample of large and small operators in the Americas, Europe and Asia have been conducted by an independent research company to generate objective feedback on technical, operational and commercial aspects of satellite operators’ services.  The resulting research will inform teleport operators about their peers’ view of the principal satellite operators and give satellite operators objective feedback on the satisfaction of an important customer group.

The recommendations for improvement will drive further discussion which will contribute to a stronger industry, and be the basis to a follow-up report from WTA on satellite operators’ recommendations to teleport operators on planning, purchasing and delivering services that employ satellite bandwidth.

The Teleport Operator Satisfaction Survey will be available free to WTA members and accredited press on March 15 at the Teleport Awards for Excellence Luncheon at SATELLITE 2011.  The report will also be available for purchase by non-members for $1,650 via the WTA Web site.
