Since 2004, WTA has publishing annual rankings of the Top Teleport Operators based on revenue and revenue growth. We develop the information through a survey of operators as well as review of financial data from publicly-traded firms. From this information, WTA publishes rankings of:
- The Global Top 20, companies by revenue including independents and satellite/fiber operators
- The Independent Top 20, companies by revenue excluding satellite and fiber operators
- The Fast 20, based on year-over-year revenue growth, including independents and satellite/fiber operators
The 2012 Top Operators, announced in November of that year, included companies with combined annual revenues of US$11.4 billion from teleport and satellite operations. Of this revenue, $9.7bn came from respondents that have submitted data to WTA consistently for the past five years. These companies posted a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28% from 2008 to 2012, with total revenues rising $2.1bn over the period. But CAGR fell to only 2% for the period from 2010 to 2012, when the global financial crisis gripped Europe and North America and caused customers to reduce service or defer expansion.
