Based on data submitted by applicants for WTA's Top Operator rankings published in November 2007, this new report provides an analysis of sources of revenue, pricing trends, mix of business and other factors from the world's leading teleport operators.  Among other results, Inside the Top Operators of 2007 reports on:
  • Strong Growth.  The leading teleport operators have racked up an average of 20% annual revenue growth over the past three years. The 2007 Global Top 20 companies had $9.5 billion in annual revenues, while the Independent Top 20 have $2.2 billion and the Fast 20 grew an average of 35% to $7.5 billion in 2007 revenues.
  • Rising Prices.  Fifty-two percent of the Top Operators raised prices for value-added services in 2007.  Satellite pricing rose for an even larger percentage (63%), which represented either a revenue or cost increase, depending on the contract.  The basic "plain vanilla" business of uplinking, however, remained flat for 68% of respondents.
  • Increased Value-Added Service Revenue.  Looking 3 years ahead, the Top Operators expect transponder sales to shrink by 8% as a share of their total revenues.  Total revenues are forecast to grow but increasingly they will come from value-added services provided by the operators themselves.
  • Enterprise Networking Comes Into Its Own.  The biggest concentration of business reported by 2007 Top Operators was in enterprise networking, with broadcast-quality video a distant second.  Forty percent of respondents generated at least half their revenue from enterprise networking compared with only 20% earning at least 50% of revenue from video.
