Description
In general, modem back–to-back performance is close to the theoretical predictions or simulation results. The small degradations are due to imperfections in the hardware implementation and approximations in the used algorithms. Performance can be expressed in terms of BER or PER (bit or packet error ratio) versus Es/No. In case of DVB-S2 transmissions, reference is made to the ETSI simulation results (see ETSI EN 302 307). When the modulator and demodulator are part of a communication channel (e.g. a satellite link, see fig.1), the overall link performance can be severely degraded by channel impairments. The various constituents of a communication channel, such as filters, amplifiers etc. can introduce waveform distortion on the received signal. These components are characterized by their input-output relationship and are classified as linear or non-linear systems. Read more about equalizing and predistortion in this Newtec-authored white paper.
