Ka-Band Satellite Terminal Diversity – What are the Engineering Economic Trade-Offs?

This paper explores the economic impact associated with earth terminal system availability, when combating rain related outages and hardware failures. Specifically, the paper addresses the costs and technical merit associated with several design choices to be made when configuring a Ka-Band earth terminal. Uplink path rain fade margin values, equal and unequal path diversity designs, and hardware redundancy are examined for cost and performance. A convincing argument is presented in support of spatial diversity designs based upon cost and performance superiority. In support of the argument, a spatial diversity switching algorithm is presented and analyzed, using actual field data obtained at a Ku-Band Diversity TV Broadcast Uplink facility during a hurricane.
